Yesterday and today I babysat two very cute, (and one very strong willed) children. Sean, the oldest, is three, and is still in only child mode, also known as, I think I'm most important, the star of the show, and so should all of you. The newest addition to the family, Courtney, just turned a year old, and is content to toddle around the living room, so long as you entertain her every now and then.
Sean loves to read. He is constantly spelling words out loud, so I sat down, and we read a stack of books together while Courtney was napping. One particular book, which had no rhythm at all, was about a boy who wanted all of the same thing. We were reading, then some event happened, and a character said,
"Variety is the spice of life!"
I couldn't help myself, I started laughing. This poorly written children's book was trying to tell three year olds that variety is the spice of life? Three year olds, even advanced three year olds, don't even know what variety is, never mind that it is the spice of life. So, I'm not sure how effectively communicated that message was.
