"I have magical powers!"

I have come to the conclusion that four year olds are the funniest creatures on the planet. I know many of them, and they are pretty much hilarious, and when I see them at Market Basket, they make my night. I mean, who else, when offered orange stickers, would stick one on their nose and sing Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer to you?

Besides their spontaneity, I love the way little kids will believe almost anything. They are definitely the only people in the world who would think that a cashier at Market Basket has magical powers. But this is what I love about them!

So, as always, I was working at Market Basket on a Friday night, and things were pretty slow, leaving me standing behind a cash register for three hours. However, a man and his son, who happened to look exactly like his dad, came through my line with a couple items. I began to bag their food, while the belt on the other side of the register continued to run. The little boy, four or five years old, had both hands pushing down on the belt and was commanding the belt to "Stoooooop!"

"Want to see something cool?" I asked, and he looked up at me in surprise, nodding.

"I have magical powers. Watch this." My hand hovered over the sensor that would make the belt stop, and his mouth dropped. I lifted my hand, let the belt run, and then brought it back down, amazing him yet again. He stared at me with an awed expression, thoroughly impressed.

"Here, you can do it too." I showed him where to put his hand, and again his mouth dropped as he controlled the belt with his newly discovered powers.
